In 2009, Cookeville Rescue Mission purchased a farm for $160,000 to use for an intensive program to help men with life-controlling habits break free of their addictions and get their lives back in order. According to Director Larry Self, the mission was able to make a down payment of $32,000 and since then have been able to whittle down the debt to just more than $108,000. At the end of April, Rescue Mission began asking for help to quickly pay off the rest. "We're not doing this because we're desperate and about to go under. We're doing this because we're on a roll," Self said. "To a country boy like me, $108,000 is a lot of money, but you can break it down in manageable bites. That means (we need) about 100 churches, people or other groups to give $1,000 to pay off the farm."
Bro. Self hopes to use what he is calling the "Exodus Plan" to raise the remaining funds for the mission. He cites Exodus 12:3-4 as his inspiration. "This was when the children of Israel were coming out of Egypt and they had to bring a sacrificial lamb," Self said. "God told Moses to tell the people that every family bring a lamb. But if the family is too small or too poor, him and his neighbor can join up."
Since the 100 Club began in April, we have been able to pay off $16,00 more on the principle, bringing the total down to a little more than $92,000!
To God Be The Glory! On August 10, 2010 we made another deposit of $8,000 on the principal which brings our balance down to $84,032.43!
Marsh Chapel Donates - To start things off, Bro. Self pledged $1,000 from the approximately 50-member congregation of the Rescue Mission chapel, which is composed largely of staff members and mission residents. "It gets even more bold," Self said. "We're wanting this, at least in pledges and offerings, to be completed by the close of our farm jamboree on Nov. 13. I believe it can happen. I really believe it can happen."
A replica of the barn at the Farm was built to collect donations in at the chapel.
Board Member George Savage Writes Memoirs
"Bittersweet" is a heart-touching collection of reflections, stories and words of wisdom inspired by one man's memories and thoughts. George Savage's memoir will take you from the present to the past and you discover a piece of your own heritage and history. He has an emotional tie with his roots; and you'll form an emotional tie to your own roots as you read his reflections.
With "Bittersweet", he keeps the memories alive and gives his family a legacy of love and courage. His journey has been one of tragedy and triumph---a bittersweet story of success, trials and tribulations, agonizing sadness and tremendous joy, love and compassion.
With the writing of "Bittersweet", he sends an inspiring message, "... if a small, poor, backwoods boy from the hills of Tennessee can persevere in the face of many hardships and obstacles and find happiness and success, you can too."
George has a heart for the work of the Cookeville Rescue Mission and although he wrote "Bittersweet" primarily for his family and friends, he is willing to send copies to anyone who reqests it along with your donation to the Cookeville Rescue Mission Step Upward Program.

History of Cookeville Rescue Mission
The Cookeville Rescue Mission began in March of 1976 at the corner of Broad & Cedar Streets in Cookeville, Tennessee, under the direction of Bro. Larry and Betty Self and Bro. U. L. Whitson. In 1982 we recruited our Board of Directors and moved to our current location at 1331 South Jefferson Avenue. In August of 1981, we were blessed to be able to purchase this property. In April 1985, with the help of God's people, through fundraisers, we were able to pay it off. In 1996, the Lighthouse Family Lodge was opened to provide emergency housing for families and single women. In 1998, the Thrift Store, Dental Clinic, Office and Warehouse Complex were built and are fulfilling a great need for this Ministry. The men's new dormitory was completed and dedicated in 2003, and our parking lot was also paved that year.
The Mission Chapel has Church services twice on Sunday and on Wednesday night, and Devotions every evening. Spiritual counseling is always available for anyone in need.
