The Cookeville Rescue Mission proudly marked a historic milestone as it celebrated 50 years of serving individuals and families in need throughout the Upper Cumberland region. The 50th Anniversary Celebration was held on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at Stevens St Baptist Church, bringing together community members, supporters, volunteers, and partners to honor five decades of compassion, service, and life transformation.
Founded in 1976 by Larry Self, the Mission began with humble beginnings and a simple purpose: to provide shelter, meals, and hope to those experiencing homelessness. Over the past 50 years, that mission has grown into a vital community resource, offering not only basic needs, but also long-term support, guidance, and pathways toward stability.
The anniversary event featured reflections on the Mission’s history, stories of lives changed, and a look ahead to the future. Attendees were reminded of the powerful impact that a caring community can have when it comes together to serve those in need.
Reaching 50 years is a testament to God’s faithfulness and the unwavering support of this community. Every person who has volunteered, donated, or partnered with us has played a role in changing lives. We are grateful for the past and excited for what lies ahead.
Today, the Cookeville Rescue Mission continues to serve men, women, and families by providing shelter, meals, and supportive services designed to restore hope and dignity. With growing needs in the community, the Mission remains committed to expanding its reach and deepening its impact in the years to come.
As the organization looks toward the future, it invites the community to remain involved through volunteering, giving, and advocacy. Together, the next 50 years can bring even greater transformation and hope.
